Robert Briggs Departs American Bible Society

After just two years in the role, Robert Briggs “has concluded his time as President and CEO of American Bible Society,” according to a statement released in June and obtained this week by MinistryWatch.

According to the statement, from board chair Karen McDonald and former board chair Jeff Brown, Brown will serve as interim president and CEO “until a search committee is formed and a successor can be named.”

However, this week Jeff Brown has also departed ABS.  MinistryWatch has reached out to ABS for an explanation of the departures, but has so far received no response.

American Bible Society is one of the nation’s oldest nonprofit organizations, founded 206 years ago.  Briggs was named president and CEO in June of 2020, following the retirement of Roy L. Peterson.  Briggs had served at American Bible Society through various leadership roles for nearly 20 years.

American Bible Society is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded by many of the same leaders who founded the United States, including Elias Boudinot, president of the Continental Congress, and John Jay, first chief justice of the United States.

In 2020, American Bible Society had revenue of about $65-million, though its expenses topped $100-million.  To see MinistryWatch’s profile on the organization, click here.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Following publication of the article above, ABS provided to MinistryWatch the following statement:

The Board of American Bible Society on Wednesday, August 31, initiated ABS’s protocols for leadership succession, immediately following Interim CEO Jeff Brown’s announcement of his resignation. We will share more information about ABS’s new acting CEO in the coming days. Jeff Brown was holding the post of CEO after the Board of Directors at ABS removed the former President and CEO, Robert L. Briggs, to improve the organizational culture and to implement its strategic plan. While the Board of Directors engages in its search for a permanent CEO, ABS’s senior leadership is strongly positioned to lead the organization in its vital mission to make the Bible available to every person in a language and format each can understand and afford.
