ONE YEAR AGO: On September 3, 2024, MinistryWatch reported that Chris Reed, president and CEO of MorningStar Ministries in Fort Mill, S.C., tendered his resignation because he “didn’t want to be leading the ministry in a case against four victims who were abused as children by a volunteer.” Read more here.

TWO YEARS AGOOn September 5, 2023, MinistryWatch reported that Sarah Young, a former missionary whose devotional prayers in “Jesus Calling” became a Christian publishing juggernaut, died at age 77. At its General Assembly in June 2024, the Presbyterian Church in America voted to investigate the teachings of the best-selling book. Read more here.

THREE YEARS AGOOn September 1, 2022, MinistryWatch reported that the director of Christian ministry World Vision’s work in Gaza was sentenced to 12 years in prison for allegedly transferring ministry funds to the terrorist organization Hamas. Mohammad El Halabi, who had already spent six years in prison as his trial was waged, planned to appeal the decision. World Vision defended its employee, saying the charges were designed to hinder humanitarian work in Gaza and the West Bank. Read more here.

FIVE YEARS AGO:  On September 8, 2020, MinistryWatch reported that televangelist Perry Stone admitted to “inappropriate” behavior with females, blaming the behavior on weariness and non-stop travel. His ministry placed him on a sabbatical. In 2023, a Bradley County grand jury found there was not enough evidence to indict Stone on charges of sexual misconduct. Read more here.
