MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT: Family Radio

Avatar photo

Family Radio, originally known as Family Stations, began in 1959 as a media platform for other non-related ministries to communicate through radio, later adding podcasts and its website. Its radio broadcasts are non-commercial and rely on contributions.

As of 2023, Family Radio broadcasts on about 60 FM and AM radio stations in all time zones of the United States. Family Radio has on its website a tool to locate the radio station nearest you.

Its website also has other interactive features such as a free online Bible, and various sign-up options for prayer, devotions and other encouraging Scripture-of-the-day options. It hosts about 20 podcasts from reformed Bible teachers such as Alistair Begg, R.C. Sproul, John Piper, Tim Keller, Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, and John MacArthur, among others.

Harold Camping, the founder of Family Stations, was an evangelist. He was known for making a number of false prophecies, including dates for the rapture and the end of the world (May 21, 2011, and October 21, 2011). At that time, the ministry not only broadcast the predictions, but put up billboards worldwide. When Camping’s forecasts failed, ministry revenue dropped significantly. Since then, the ministry has rebounded, but its expenses out pace its growing revenue almost every year.

Camping passed away in 2013 and the ministry is now primarily a platform for other ministries. Family Radio says its aim is to be a media platform, primarily on radio and internet, to spread the comfort and hope of the gospel, through the worship of traditional hymns, Biblical teachers, and readings of the Bible.
