The American Bible Society (ABS), one of the country’s oldest nonprofit groups dating back more than 200 years, has named Dr. Jennifer Holloran as its new president and CEO. She is the first woman to hold the leadership post at the bible translation and distribution group.

Holloran has a long history in the bible translation industry, having spent 22 years at Wycliffe Bible Translators USA in various leadership roles, including as chief operations officer.

She has also served on the boards of several other nonprofit organizations, including Missio Nexus, Mission Aviation Fellowship USA, and Partners International.

“Jennifer Holloran brings a unique combination of professional experience, servant-leadership mentality, deep passion for the Bible, and great energy for pursuing innovation that together will ensure American Bible Society remains nimble and impactful in this next phase of its work,” ABS board chair Katherine Barnhart said in a press statement.

According to the ABS State of the Bible report for 2023, American engagement with the Bible is down. In 2023, the research found that only 47 million were regularly engaged with the Bible, down from 71 million in 2020.

Holloran will be challenged with helping ABS “to be nimble in responding to these trends by finding, fostering and furthering innovations in Bible access and engagement.”

ABS has been engaged in a search for a new leader for over a year. In September 2022, Robert Briggs was removed as president and CEO after just two years in the role. Jeff Brown stepped in as the interim leader, but resigned after only a brief stint.

Darrin Podeschi is the current interim CEO until Holloran takes the reins on March 1.

In the MinistryWatch database, American Bible Society earns a one-star financial efficiency rating, an “A” transparency grade, and a donor confidence score of 82 out of 100.
