The Museum of the Bible (MOTB) has named Dr. Carlos Campo as its next CEO following unanimous approval by the Board of Trustees.

Campo will be taking the reins from Harry Hargrave, who MOTB says was “instrumental in making the Museum of the Bible a reality from its inception to its opening in 2017 and beyond.”

Campo currently serves as president of both Ashland University and Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio. He has also been an MOTB board member since 2015. He will finish out his contract with Ashland through May 2024 before assuming his role as CEO of MOTB in June 2024.

Campo has a substantial track record in leadership throughout his career in higher education. He previously served as president of Regent University and as vice president of academics at the College of Southern Nevada. He was also chair of the Hispanic Education Alliance of the National Hispanic Leadership Conference.

During his nine years as Ashland University’s president, Campo has led the school through a number of milestones, including the school’s “Campaign for Every Individual,” which helped raise more than $100 million for the university.

He led Ashland through reaccreditation and three successful rounds of state funding, and founded new graduate programs in physician assistant studies. Campo also helped found Ashland’s educational program for prison inmates.

In a statement released by MOTB, Campo said, “This museum is unique in the world, and therefore comes with a unique responsibility. We are engaging culture with the world’s most influential book in the world’s most influential city. A world leader among museums, Museum of the Bible pushes the boundaries of technology and interaction, aiming to redefine the museum experience by offering visitors a powerful, enriching journey steeped in the Bible’s narrative and its unparalleled influence on the world and in history. All of these things and more make serving as CEO a tremendous privilege. Karen and I can’t wait.”

The Museum of the Bible is located in Washington, D.C. just three blocks from the U.S. Capitol building. Since opening its doors in 2017, the museum has seen more than 2 million people tour through its exhibits.

A search is currently underway to find Campo’s successor at Ashland.
