Ministry Spotlight: The Bible Project

Avatar photo

The Bible Project, an ed-tech nonprofit, has seen rapid growth over the last few years. From 2022 to 2023, the organization, which says it is 100% crowd-funded, saw its revenue jump from $14.5 million to $26.7 million. Total expenses also rose from $16.1 million to $22.8 million.

Founded in 2014, the organization has a 4-star Efficiency Rating, but its Donor Confidence Score (DCS) is only 68%—still within the “Give With Confidence” designation, but at the low end of that range. The Bible Project’s DCS in large part is because of the structure of its board. It currently has five board members, only three of whom are independent members.

Co-founders Jon Collins (Chief Creative Officer) and Tim Mackie (Chief Education Officer) are both on the board. And according to The Bible Project’s 2023 Form 990, they “have permanent positions on the Board until either death or resignation from the Board.”

The mission of The Bible Project “is to help people experience the Bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus.” The organization does this through animated videos, podcasts, scripture reading plans, classes and The Bible Project App.

The Bible Project uses Excellence in Giving for financial accountability. They currently have $24.5 million in net assets.
