Ministry Spotlight: In Touch Ministries

Organization sees significant drop in revenue with increase in net assets

This week, In Touch Ministries dropped in both its Transparency Grade and Donor Confidence Score ratings.

The organization, founded in 1972 by the late pastor Dr. Charles Stanley, is a broadcast ministry.

According to its website, its mission is to “to lead people worldwide into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and to strengthen the local church.” It does this through television, podcasts, radio shows, web-based content, reading plans and In Touch Magazine. Guidestar reports that “the ‘In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley’ radio and television programs are broadcast nationally on more than 1,200 radio and TV outlets in both English and Spanish.”

In Touch Ministries’ Transparency Grade dropped two letters, from an A to a C, because it no longer releases its Form 990s and does not make audited financial reports available to the public. According to its Guidestar profile, “the organization is not required to file an annual return with the IRS because it is a church.”

That means In Touch Ministries has joined a growing number of nonprofits petitioning the IRS to be reclassified as a church in order to avoid releasing its Form 990s. Without access to this form, donors are unlikely to see where their money is being used or what the salaries are for top executives of the organization.

In 2023, the organization had $116 million in revenue with $274 million in net assets, according to the ECFA’s limited financial profile of the ministry. That’s compared with 2021, the last public form 990 available, when the organization had $133 million in revenue and $141 million in net assets.
