Global Christian Relief (GCR) recently saw two of its Ministry Watch ratings drop because it no longer makes its Form 990s public, joining a growing number of ministries that have petitioned the IRS to be reclassified as a church.

The organization’s Donor Confidence Score fell from 100 to 75, and its Transparency Grade from an A to C. Its revenue also dropped between 2022 and 2023.

In 2023, the organization cut ties with its parent organization, Open Doors International (ODI), and rebranded itself as Global Christian Relief. This is reflected in its change in revenue and assets, as it now operates as an independent ministry.

According to GCR’s ECFA profile, which releases limited financial data on member organizations, in 2021 the ministry had a revenue of $39.4 million. In 2023, its revenue dropped to $10.3 million with a total of $13.5 million in expenses and $10.9 million in net assets.

While the organization does not release 990s, it has made one audited financial statement available on its website.

Its financial page notes that “Global Christian Relief has switched from a calendar year to a Fiscal Year starting July 1 and ending June 30. The attached Audited Financial Statement covers the six month period from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023. The period from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023 will be included in the future Audited Financial Statements for the fiscal year ended 6/30/2024.”

According to its website, Global Christian Relief “serves persecuted Christians around the world.” They do this by providing food, shelter, emergency relief, job training, Bible distribution, and working with local churches and partners in countries like Iraq, Pakistan, and Syria. In addition to aid, the organization is also a watchdog and advocacy group for persecuted Christians. Its president, Dr. David Curry, serves on the United States Commission on Religious Freedom.
