Ministry Spotlight — Alpha USA

Evangelistic ministry growing, but expenses exceed revenue

Alpha USA, headquartered in Illinois, recently saw its overall MinistryWatch efficiency rating fall from four stars to three due to a significant increase in fundraising costs.

The organization ranks 42 out of 45 in the Evangelism sector for fund acquisition. Its fundraising cost ratio is 11%, compared to 6% for other organizations in the same sector.

Most organizations in its sector get approximately 97% of its funding from donors. But in 2022 Alpha relies on donors for just 67% of its revenue, compared to 96% in 2019. The organization does create and sell resources, so it derives some of its funding from those sales.

From 2021 to 2022, the organization’s spending ratio jumped from 95% to 105%. Its total revenue for 2022 was $10.2 million and its total expenses were $10.7 million.

Alpha USA helps churches and other organizations host an 11-week series that explores the Christian faith. They also provide resources and videos for the course. “Alpha helps create a space for honest conversation around some of life’s biggest questions,” its website states. “It is designed to provide guests an opportunity to connect with one another while providing the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, and opinions in a safe and caring environment. Alpha helps bring people together while providing the chance to encounter Jesus.”
