Samaritan’s Purse is one of various disaster response ministries that deployed teams to Kentucky over the weekend after tornadoes spawned by a large storm system killed scores of people as it ripped through multiple states Friday night, killing more than 100 people. A tractor-trailer stocked with tools and equipment left the Samaritan’s Purse Texas center Saturday morning with another to follow from North Carolina as weather permits. Teams of volunteers will help families salvage personal belongings, clean up downed trees, and tarp damaged roofs. Convoy of Hope has also deployed relief supplies, Christian Aid Ministries was assessing needs in Kentucky and Tennessee over the weekend, and Mercy Chefs distributed hot chef-prepared meals to victims.
The Ruth Project, a ministry in Illinois focused on equipping foster families with the practical, emotional, and spiritual support they need to succeed for the long haul, has served 51 foster families and 140 children since opening its Storehouse in July. Families took home clothes, toys, equipment, supplies, and school backpacks for free. The ministry has also hosted more than 20 events, including birthdays and Dash & Dine. The number of U.S. children in foster care had risen to 424,000 in 2020, while the rate of foster families struggle to keep up—some studies suggest 30 to 50 percent of foster families don’t continue past the first year.
The Jesus Film Riders, a group of six college graduates, ride their motorbikes through the rustic terrain of Ghana, West Africa, to share the Gospel and show the JESUS Film to often-remote villages. Sponsored by the OneWay Africa Jesus Film Campaign, the Riders build relationships with villagers, provide water filtration units, and then, as allowed, show the JESUS Film. OneWay Africa then plants a church and leads new believers through a discipleship program. Since the JESUS Film Campaign launched in 2016, more than 225,000 unreached villagers have seen the film, according to the ministry, and more than 28,226 have made decisions to follow Christ.
