Organization sees significant drop in both revenue and expenses
Charity:water’s Donor Confidence Score fell from 45 to 43 points this week, giving it an “Exercise Caution” label when considering donating to the organization.

The nonprofit, based out of New York City, works to bring clean water to communities around the world. According to its website, “703 million people lack basic access to clean and safe drinking water. We’ve been on a mission to end the water crisis since 2006.”
Charity:water partners with local organizations in remote areas to develop water solutions like wells, water purification systems, latrines, piped systems and more.
From 2022 to 2023, the organization saw a significant shift in a number of its Ministry Watch financial categories.
In 2022, the organization had a revenue of $96.8 million, and in 2023, its revenue was $47.2 million. Over that year, its total expenses also went from $101.2 million to $42.5 million. Its program expense ratio moved from 81% to 66%. MinistryWatch reached out to ask about the change, but has not heard back at time of publication.

Charity:water now has a 1-Star Financial Efficiency Rating—in part, because of fundraising and general and admin costs. The organization has an 18% fundraising cost ratio in comparison with others in the Relief and Development Sector at 6%. It also spends 13% on general and admin costs. The organization has $80.7 million in net assets.
It does make its 990s, audited financials and Impact Reports available to the public.
