Who Shepherds the Shepherds?
Four Christian ministries provide confidential care, coaching, and counseling for pastors and their families before ministry pressures become a crisis
October is Clergy Appreciation Month, and Pastor Appreciation Day falls Oct. 11 this year. Churches may celebrate with cards, meals or public recognition. But some of the pressures pastors carry are harder to acknowledge from the pulpit.

Pastors counsel marriages while tending their own. They walk families through grief while absorbing loss themselves. They lead staff, manage conflict, and respond to crises—often while knowing the people they serve cannot always be the people with whom they speak most freely.
This week’s Ministries Making a Difference looks at four Christian ministries that give pastors and their families confidential places to talk, receive counseling, and build healthier patterns before exhaustion, isolation, or crisis drives them from ministry.
At MinistryWatch, we spend much of our time reporting on questions of transparency, accountability, and stewardship—including stories of waste, fraud, and abuse. Ministries Making a Difference highlights another part of the picture: ministries doing notable work in their communities and around the world.

PastorServe
A PastorServe coach helped Devin Wendt find the confidence and courage to continue in ministry at a time of struggle. The support also benefited his wife and their marriage. PastorServe describes pastoral life in terms of a “FrontStage” and “BackStage.” The FrontStage includes the visible work—preaching, vision, communication, and leading volunteers. The BackStage includes what congregations may see less often: emotional health, marriage and family, stress, mental health and burnout.
Founded in 1999, the ministry provides coaching, soul care, crisis care, consulting, and leadership development. Its stated goal is not only to respond when a pastor is already in crisis, but to provide preventative care that helps ministry leaders develop healthier relationships and rhythms. You may view their latest impact reports here. PastorServe has a 4-Star Financial Efficiency Rating, an A Transparency Grade, and a Donor Confidence Score of 100 in the MinistryWatch database.

Standing Stone Ministry
More than 340 Standing Stone shepherds and their spouses recently gathered at the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove in North Carolina for a week of training, worship, renewal, and time together. Then they went home to continue caring for more than 4,700 ministry leaders across the country.
Standing Stone Ministry pairs pastors, missionaries, ministry leaders and spouses with seasoned ministry veterans who provide ongoing, confidential care at no charge. Shepherds regularly call, meet with, and pray for the leaders assigned to them, whether those leaders are thriving, struggling, or transitioning
The ministry says confidentiality is central to the relationship. Pastors need a place to speak candidly about marriage, family, ministry pressures, loneliness, or discouragement without worrying about how those conversations may affect their churches. Standing Stone also offers private retreats for one ministry couple at a time.Standing Stone Ministry has a 3-Star Financial Efficiency Rating, a C Transparency Grade, and a Donor Confidence Score of 98 in the MinistryWatch database.

Care for Pastors
After a difficult season among their church staff, Tim and Tandy turned to Care for Pastors for help.
The couple found support not only for themselves but for their church team. According to their testimony, the ministry gave staff members guidance to work through challenges and grow together while giving Tim and Tandy a safe place to process the pressures of ministry.
Care for Pastors provides counseling, coaching, and relational support for pastors and their families. Pastors’ wives can connect privately with other ministry spouses, while resources and counseling are also available for pastors’ children. The ministry encourages pastoral families to seek care before pressures become a crisis and offers both virtual and in-person counseling.

Blessing Ranch Ministries
One Florida pastor arrived at Blessing Ranch hurt, burned out, and broken. He later said that being listened to, prayed with, and given room to process his struggles helped put him on a road toward renewal. Blessing Ranch Ministries keeps the pastor unnamed—another reminder that effective pastoral care often depends on privacy.
The ministry provides intensive professional counseling and ongoing coaching for Christian leaders. Founded in 1996, the ministry says it has served more than 4,000 leaders facing crises, transitions, emotional and spiritual health challenges, marriage difficulties, and other pressures of leadership. Its coaching program emphasizes confidentiality, giving leaders a place outside their everyday circle to speak openly and receive objective counsel.
