“It is with unspeakable sadness that we share the news that Tony Morgan passed away on the morning of Wednesday, September 4, 2024, after suffering a heart attack two days before and battling with all his strength,” the Unstuck Group announced in a statement the same day. “His wife Emily, his four adult children, and their spouses were there by his side.”

The for-profit Unstuck Group describes itself as a church consultancy firm that doesn’t like to be called church consultancy. “What we really do,” according to The Unstuck Group’s website, “is help pastors clarify where God’s called the church to go in the future, and how you’ll get there—and then we coach you as you lead change.”

Since its founding in 2009, the organization claims to have “helped over 600 churches solve the complexity of their staffing and structure and find greater ministry effectiveness on the other side.”

Before his passing, Morgan authored books and articles on leadership and served a combined total of 14 years on the senior leadership teams of three large churches. In 2009, he had a very public but amicable exit from NewSpring Church in South Carolina, when he and founding pastor Perry Noble (later fired from NewSpring for moral failings) agreed to part ways following a strategic difference of opinion.

“Tony was the kind of leader who lived up to his calling,” the statement from Unstuck read. “If you ever wondered if he was the same person behind closed doors that he was in his books, on The Unstuck Church Podcast, or facilitating strategic planning at your church, you can be fully assured that he was.”

Aaron Hur Group, another church consulting firm, posted condolences on Facebook: “It is with deep sadness to hear of the passing of our friend Tony Morgan! Please be in prayer for Emily and their family! Tony leaves a huge mark upon all of us in the church world! His impact will be felt all throughout eternity! Our team will be praying as well for our friends at The Unstuck Group! Tony was a great team leader and I know there is a huge hole in their hearts today!”

The Unstuck Group said it will “share more details about what’s next in plans to celebrate Tony’s life as we have them.”
