Prison ministry drops out of ECFA, doesn’t release Form 990s

Kairos Prison Ministry has dropped out of the ECFA. The nonprofit also does not release its Form 990s to the public.

In light of the organization’s ECFA membership change and lack of 990 information, Kairos now has a MinistryWatch Donor Confidence Score of 48, an “Exercise Caution” designation.

According to its Guidestar profile, Kairos is classified as a “religious organization” with the IRS and “is not required to file an annual return.”

While the organization does make some audited financial statements available on its website, these statements don’t provide the full scope of financial information a 990 would, like the salaries of its board members and executives.

Kairos is based out of DeBary, Florida, but offers prison ministry programs across the United States and around the world.

According to its website, Kairos “is a lay-led, interdenominational Christian ministry in which men and women volunteers bring Christ’s love and forgiveness to prisoners and their families.”

It does this through three main initiatives, which focus on weekend retreats: Kairos Inside, Kairos Outside and Kairos Torch.

According to its 2023 audited financial statement, Kairos had revenue of $6.8 million.

Kairos declined to provide a comment for the story.
