Shopping with purpose, ‘Dress a Girl,’ breaking poverty cycle through education, CCCU’s new president

Hope Bargain Center Eau Claire, Hope Gospel Mission’s flagship thrift store in west central Wisconsin, has become a destination shopping spot with its cleverly designed displays that feature everything from an Esteban/Chevy guitar, Timberland shoes, and old west themes to Fourth of July and summer hats. Proceeds from its sales benefit the Mission, which provides food, shelter and clothes to homeless people and facilitates addiction recovery programs. Hope Gospel Mission has 4 stars and an “A” transparency grade in the MinistryWatch database, and a donor confidence score of 98.

Dress a Girl sewing circle at Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene in Arizona

Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene in Arizona has been sewing dresses for young girls across Africa, Asia-Pacific, Mesoamerica and South America since 2012 when a small sewing circle started their “Dress a Girl” passion project. The group’s leader, Sandra Moore, said the sewing group, which has now grown to 100 people, has made more than 15,000 dresses. The seamstresses deliver the dresses themselves during missions trips.

In May, Extreme Response International celebrated the graduation of 36 kids from a daycare in the Philippine community of Tay Tay, where the ministry runs its Pathway for Hope program. Also, “adults from the community logged 214 sessions of vocational skills and 11 completed their training,” according to ER, which works throughout the world to break generational poverty through education, skills training, and leadership development. ER has 4 stars and an “A” transparency grade in the MinistryWatch database, and a donor confidence score of 97.

The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) has announced its 8th president, Dr. David A. Hoag. “Dr. Hoag brings 35+ years of experience serving & leading #ChristianHigherEd institutions.
