Former Youth Leader Pleads Guilty to Trafficking Teen

Whiteside admits transporting minor for sex, months after state sentence sparked public outcry.

Federal court proceedings have substantially changed the consequences facing former Getwell Church youth leader Lindsey Whiteside, nearly a year after a Mississippi judge sentenced her to house arrest for sexually abusing a teenager under her authority.

Lindsey Whiteside

Whiteside pleaded guilty Sept. 25 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi to transporting a minor from Tennessee to Mississippi with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum of life. Whiteside could also face a fine of up to $250,000 and at least five years of supervised release after imprisonment. She will be required to register as a sex offender.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2027.

According to court documents, the allegations arose from two church-related trips.

In a statement shared earlier with MinistryWatch, Getwell Church said that after a student’s family reported concerns about inappropriate text messages, the church terminated Whiteside and notified local authorities. Within a week, church leaders told the congregation that a serious breach of conduct had led to her dismissal.

Prosecutors said Whiteside “groomed the minor and her family over an extended period of time” to gain their trust, eventually persuading the family to allow her to take the girl across state lines, where prosecutors said the abuse occurred.

Whiteside pleaded guilty to related state charges in October 2025 and was sentenced to three years of home confinement followed by seven years of probation. She was also ordered to register as a sex offender wherever she lives, works or attends school.

The sentence drew public criticism from DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton, who said his office was forwarding evidence to federal prosecutors because some of the alleged abuse occurred during interstate church trips.

Within days, a federal grand jury indicted Whiteside.

Although a federal magistrate initially granted Whiteside a $60,000 unsecured bond and house arrest, prosecutors challenged that decision. U.S. District Judge Debra Brown later granted the government’s motion to revoke her release, and Whiteside has remained in federal custody while the case proceeded.

The plea resolves only one of the three counts in the October 2025 federal indictment.

The first count alleged that in July 2024, Whiteside knowingly transported the minor from Tennessee into Mississippi intending to engage in sexual activity that constituted sexual battery under Mississippi law. A second count alleged she transported the girl from Mississippi to Georgia for criminal sexual activity. A third count alleged that between May and November 2024, she used “interstate communications” to persuade, induce, entice or coerce the minor to engage in sexual activity. The government agreed to dismiss the second and third counts as part of the plea agreement.

During the Sept. 25 hearing, prosecutors said that while returning from a church trip, Whiteside traveled with the girl in a private vehicle rather than on the church bus, intending to engage in sexual activity with her, according to Action News 5.

Court records show the case was postponed several times before Whiteside moved in August to change her plea on the first count. A trial had most recently been scheduled for October.

Her guilty plea eliminates that trial and moves the case directly to sentencing, where the federal court will determine how much prison time Whiteside will serve.
