Filling the Summer Gaps

Ministries stepping into the gaps that open when school is out.

At MinistryWatch, our mission is to help Christians become more faithful, generous, and effective stewards of the resources God has entrusted to them. It’s why we advocate for transparency, accountability, and efficiency in Christian ministries. Because of that, we cover a lot of stories we’d rather not have to—stories of waste, fraud, and abuse.

But that’s not the whole picture. This column exists to amplify ministries doing excellent work—to spotlight ministries making a difference in their own communities and around the world.

As graduation parties wind down and school lets out for the summer, many families begin feeling the strain of a season that can bring both celebration and challenge. For some, summer means camps and new opportunities. For others, it means lost access to school meals, less structure, and added pressure at home.

This week’s roundup highlights ministries stepping into those summer gaps—serving children, supporting families, and encouraging educators before the next school year begins.

Mentoring Alliance

Mentoring Alliance is leaning into one of its busiest seasons through Christ-centered day camps that combine fun, academics, and faith formation. Its 2026 summer camps started June 1 in multiple Texas communities, offering breakfast, lunch, and daily reading and math instruction to students entering first through sixth grades. The ministry says the camps also create space for worship, mentoring relationships, and gospel conversations, with flexible pricing to make participation more accessible.

Beyond summer camps, Mentoring Alliance’s year-round Mentor Connect program pairs children with Christ-centered mentors through school-based support, monthly group sessions, and guided curriculum designed to strengthen them spiritually, emotionally, and academically.

Hand2Hand

Hand2Hand says school may be out soon, but hunger does not take a summer break. That is why the ministry is gearing up to serve West Michigan children through its 2026 Summer Food Program, which offers food for kids ages 3 to 18 at pickup locations with no sign-up required.

During the school year, Hand2Hand focuses on a specific gap in childhood hunger: the long stretch between school meals on Friday and breakfast on Monday. The ministry provides weekend food and support for children facing hunger by mobilizing churches, schools, businesses, individuals, and families to work together. Its mission is to deliver nutritious food to students on weekends and during extended school breaks while also providing hope and opportunity to thrive. Hand2Hand has 4 Stars for financial efficiency and a C Transparency Grade in the MinistryWatch database, and a Donor Confidence Score of 98 (Give with Confidence).

Christian Community Action

Christian Community Action (CCA) is emphasizing a summer reality many families know well: when school ends, many children lose access to the meals they count on each day. Through its Kids Eat Free program, the Lewisville, Texas, ministry says it provides weekly meals to children throughout the summer, including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, and fresh produce. It says it will feed 1,250 children this year.

CCA is also launching its new Seeds for Success program. The program is designed to move individuals and families from crisis toward longer-term stability through coaching, classes, career services, spiritual care, and possible housing support. The program shifts from one-time aid to relationship-based, long-term help. Applications open June 1, 2026.

Children’s Hunger Fund

As families face food gaps worldwide during the summer months, Children’s Hunger Fund (CHF) continues to highlight the kind of service it hopes to inspire. On his 13th birthday, Joshua Flancer did not ask for a traditional party. Instead, he spent the day packing food for families in need through CHF. That one-time act became a 13-year tradition: Josh kept celebrating his birthdays by volunteering. He later became a recurring donor and continued serving even after graduating from UCLA and beginning work as a software engineer at NASA.

Founded in 1991, CHF partners with local churches in the United States and abroad to deliver food as a bridge to the Gospel. MinistryWatch reported in 2022 that CHF’s revenue had nearly tripled since 2016 and that it worked with roughly 1,000 churches to distribute food packs and build relationships with families in need. Children’s Hunger Fund has 4 Stars for financial efficiency and an A Transparency Grade in the MinistryWatch database, with a Donor Confidence Score of 100.

Christian Educators

What about teacher support? Summer is not only a time of need for children and families, but also a season of renewal for teachers. Christian Educators is offering a Summer Day Retreat for Ohio Christian educators June 30, 2026, in Galion, Ohio. The retreat is designed to encourage teachers to step away from the pace of the school year for a day of spiritual renewal and fellowship. It will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include worship, fellowship, prayer, vision casting, and a complimentary lunch.
