Christian Blogger Samuel Sey Removed to Canada, Family Says
Sey, who was arrested by ICE last week, believed he was following legal process for long-term residency.
(RNS) — A conservative Christian blogger and podcaster who once wrote, “If you love America, you should support ICE,” has been removed from the U.S. and is now in Canada, his family said Friday (Oct. 30), nine days after immigration agents arrested him at an Ohio airport.

Samuel Sey, whose “Slow to Write” blog is popular with Reformed evangelical Christians, was arrested by ICE at the Columbus International Airport. Supporters and his family initially believed a clerical error had led to his detention.
“We sincerely believed we were following the legal process, which we continue to respect,” Sey’s wife, Annie, posted on X. “Sadly, Samuel was removed from the U.S. and is in Canada as of today,” October 30.
Earlier this week, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that Sey, who lived in Ohio with his family, had overstayed his visa after entering the country in 2022.
“Sey has no pending applications and accepted voluntary departure. He will remain in ICE custody until removed from the United States,” the spokesperson told RNS in an email on Oct. 25.
In an email on Sunday (Nov. 1) DHS said that Sey had departed the country voluntarily.
Originally from Ghana, Sey grew up in Canada after his family immigrated there. After moving to the U.S. to get married, he had been working on obtaining long-term legal status, according to statements from his family and supporters.

Sey’s arrest made headlines, in part because of his past support for Trump administration immigration policies, including writing that Christian ethics demand deportations. “If you love America you should support ICE,” he wrote on X in January. A series of well-known conservative influencers, including Allie Beth Stuckey, Megan Basham, and Joel Berry, also have all posted support for Sey on social media after news of his arrest became public.
He is best known for writing about theology and for his conservative pro-life views, along with his criticism of DEI initiatives and COVID-19 vaccine mandates. More recently, he had feuded with a group of Christian influencers who promote openly antisemitic and white supremacist views online.
Such views, Sey told RNS, were unchristian.
Sey did not immediately respond to a text requesting comment.
A crowdfunding campaign for Sey and his family has raised more than $35,000.
In her social media post, Annie Sey thanks supporters for their prayers and assistance following her husband’s arrest. “Although this has been devastating to our family and the outcome is not what we had hoped, we will trust God’s sovereign plan and work to reunite our family.”
