A list of the “Best Christian Workplaces” includes 310 faith-based organizations located in the United States, Canada, and 15 other countries.

The certificated workplaces include Christian-owned businesses, Christian schools and universities, missions organizations, churches, rescue missions, and other parachurch ministries. They are certified as “flourishing” if they have a score of at least 4.25 out of 5 on an employee engagement survey. The list has grown by over 100 in the last five years, reporting 208 on its list in 2021.

“These organizations seek to honor God and reflect biblical values at work. We have seen many organizations move from unhealthy to healthy to flourishing, as they have utilized the data from our research-based assessment,” Jay Bransford, president and CEO of Best Christian Workplaces, said in a press release. “These organizations make an eternal difference while setting the standard as the best places to work.”

Bransford says employees of these businesses and ministries are more engaged and more productive because of the work their leadership has done to make them the “Best Christian Workplaces.”

For the most part, groups listed as “Best Christian Workplaces” are also rated well in the MinistryWatch 1000 database for their transparency and accountability toward donors.

For example, rescue mission Water Street Ministries in Lancaster, Penn., is on the list and has a Donor Confidence Score of 72 with MinistryWatch—a “Give With Confidence” designation.

Pro-life ministry Care Net is not only considered a “Best Christian Workplace,” but it receives a Donor Confidence Score of 100 and an ‘A’ Transparency Grade with MinistryWatch.

Bethlehem College & Seminary is an example of a disconnect between the workplace list and ranking by MinistryWatch. While it meets the Best Christian Workplace criteria, it is not transparent with donors — failing to file a Form 990 return with the Internal Revenue Service or post an audited financial statement on its website. It has a Donor Confidence Score of 46, meaning donors should withhold giving. There are other similar examples, including TEAM and the Gideons International.

An organization interested in becoming  a “Best Christian Workplace” starts by evaluating its current level of organizational leadership and team health through assessments and surveys. Once it has those results in hand, the business or ministry can begin to develop a plan for areas of growth and development.

Best Christian Workplaces provides resources, guides, and toolkits to help “nurture” the workplace culture and eventually “flourish.”

Its mission is to “equip and inspire Christian leaders to create an engaged, Flourishing Workplace™.” It started in 2003 and has since surveyed over 1,000 businesses, nonprofit ministries, and schools.

Best Christian Workplaces is structured as a nonprofit and had annual revenue of about $2.7 million last year.
