This week, Globe International Ministries’ Transparency Grade fell to a D rating. The organization does not file a Form 990, and does not make its audited financials available to the public.
Globe International Ministries is based out of Pensacola, Florida. According to its website, its mission is to “support hundreds of churches across denominations, aiding the Body of Christ in fulfilling the Great Commission through training, sending, and serving ministries and missionaries worldwide, both domestically and abroad.”
Alan Prouty, executive director for Globe International, told MinistryWatch the reason they don’t file a 990 is because they’re “a foreign missions society; it’s classified by the IRS and not required.” He also said filing a Form 990 “puts our missionaries at risk that are in highly sensitive countries where it’s illegal to be a Christian and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
In a recent article, MinistryWatch President Warren Cole Smith argued that Form 990s do not compromise security. “If a U.S. ministry does work overseas, it must disclose the amount of money it spends on that overseas work on its Form 990, but that disclosure is by region, not by individual country,” he said.
Samaritan’s Purse and World Vision, for example, work in closed countries all around the world, but both organizations still file Form 990s and are transparent with U.S. donors.
According to limited financial data from Globe International’s ECFA profile, in 2023, the organization had a revenue of $7.3 million, and its expenses were $7.5 million. The organization also has $4.9 million in net assets.
Currently, the ministry serves more than 300 missionaries in 45 countries. They offer a range of services including church planting, establishing and running Bible schools, medical ministries and more.
To earn an “A” transparency grade in the MinistryWatch database, a ministry must file a Form 990, make audited financials available on its website, and be a member of the ECFA. If a ministry completes two of the three requirements, it earns a “C,” and if it meets only one requirement, it earns a “D.” If the ministry completes none of the requirements, it earns an “F.”
