Donations, Participant Levels Up on GivingTuesday

Despite concerns that pandemic fatigue might dampen giving, donors contributed a record $2.7 billion to nonprofit organizations on GivingTuesday Nov. 30, an increase of 9% over last year.

Volunteering on the day increased by 11% over 2020, and gifts of goods were up 8% compared to 2020, the GivingTuesday organization said

An estimated 35 million adults participated in giving that on that day, an increase of 6% over 2020.

“This extraordinary show of generosity lit up the world against a backdrop of a dark two years,” said Asha Curran, co-founder and CEO of GivingTuesday. “Giving is an important metric of civic participation, a way to build the kind of society we want to live in. Our hope is that this boost of generosity is an inspiration for continued giving, kindness, and recognition of our shared humanity each day of the year.”

The GivingTuesday organization said it would share additional results and deeper analysis of giving in the coming weeks, compiled by the GivingTuesday Data Commons, a group that includes more than 300 contributing partners and 50 global data labs that compile information on charitable giving that can be used to inspire more giving around the world.

GivingTuesday started 10 years ago to encourage people to give to charities as a counterpoint to holiday consumerism. It is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Fidelity Charitable, the Ford Foundation, Ford Motor Company, LinkedIn for Nonprofits, and the National Philanthropic Trust.
