Program Accomplishments [ Back to top ]

In 2000, Coral Ridge Ministries produced and aired a one-hour Christmas special titled, Who Is This Jesus that was viewed by more than 12 million viewers nationwide. This ambitious production, which also aired Easter 2001, featured Dr. Kennedy, actor Dean Jones, and New Testament scholars in an engaging and compelling answer to ABC’s Search for Jesus, a program that presented fringe theories as mainstream scholarship to largely dismiss New Testament claims about Christ.

In 1996, CRM launched the Center for Reclaiming America, a nationwide network of concerned Christians seeking to restore virtue to American culture. The Center informs citizens and offers vital resources to help them reclaim their communities for Christ.

In 1995, CRM launched The D. James Kennedy Center for Christian Statesmanship in Washington, D.C., a spiritually based outreach to men and women in positions of influence and authority in our nation’s capital. The Center, led by its Director, Dr. Frank Wright, offers weekly Bible studies, “Politics and Principle” luncheons, Evangelism Explosion training, and an annual Distinguished Christian Statesman Award.

Since 1994, CRM has hosted the Reclaiming America For Christ Conference in Fort Lauderdale. This event, which draws concerned Christians from around the country, features some of the nation’s foremost Christian leaders, and offers attendees the information, inspiration, and tools they need to bring biblical perspectives into public life.

Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]

The Statement of Faith of Coral Ridge Ministries Media Inc. is the thirty-three (33) chapter Westminster Confession of Faith as published by the Presbyterian Church in America in 1990.

    Supporters Might Say
    • CRM is reaching millions daily with spiritual nourishment and comfort.
    • CRM, through its insistence on the Cultural Mandate, is sounding the alarm and warning believers about the evils happening under their very noses. Precious few Christian ministries perform such a service.
    • CRM’s commitment to apologetics (defending the faith) helps the ministry to reach some people who would otherwise remain unconvinced of the Gospel message.
    • CRM does not hesitate to blow the whistle on suspect organizations (such as the ACLU) that others might fear to oppose.
    • CRM’s Cultural Mandate is a balanced take on the Christian’s social responsibility, and ultimately placed in service of the Gospel.
    • The tremendous response to CRM’s work (e.g. listener and viewer response to broadcasts) testifies to the value and efficacy of the ministry.
    • CRM, through the Center For Christian Statesmanship, is in a unique position to be a witness for Christ in our nation’s Capital.

    Critics Might Say
    • Some of CRM’s publications seem a bit too opportunistic, in that moral crises in America and abroad are used as fund-raising platforms for CRM.
    • The Cultural Mandate (represented by groups like the Moral Majority) has failed; CRM should not try to reform culture (which is irredeemable), but should use its resources in more useful ways.
    • CRM seems far too right-leaning to take seriously its claims to be non-partisan.
    • Some of Dr. Kennedy’s teachings are a bit sensationalistic or far-fetched (e.g. the “Gospel in the Stars” theory taught on Truths That Transform and in his book, The Real Meaning of the Zodiac).
    • Dr. Kennedy has responded to criticisms of his teaching in a manner which is unbecoming a minister of the Gospel; not addressing the issue, but simply casting aspersions on those who seek to correct his errors.
    • CRM may not preach theonomy, but its ideal of “reforming culture” may lead it in a direction opposed to the principle of religious liberty.

    Worldview Considerations
    • CRPC, following the Presbyterian Church of America, subscribes to the 1645 Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms as the purest human expression of the teachings of Scripture. The Westminster Confession is marked by its commitment to the basic tenants of the Protestant Reformation and to the five points of classical Calvinism in particular.
    • CRM does not post a statement of faith at its website.
    • Dr. Kennedy’s teachings on “Secret Bible Codes” and “the Gospel in the Stars” have been strongly criticized by some leading evangelical thinkers. These teachings stipulate, respectively, that certain truths of the faith can be discovered by applying esoteric rules of interpretation to the Scriptures, and by interpreting aright the meaning of the constellations of the Zodiac (e.g. the constellation Centaurus teaches the truth of the Incarnation- the two natures of Jesus Christ).
    • Dr. Kennedy’s involvement with Trinity Broadcasting Network and Paul Crouch is seen by many as a dangerous association with heretical teaching.
    • CRM and Dr. Kennedy have taken a strong stand against the theological liberalism that has taken hold of many mainline denominations.

MinistryWatch.com’s Take
May 2003
By Andy Preslar, Research Fellow

Summary
The mission of Coral Ridge Media Ministries, Inc. (CRM) is three-fold: (1) to preach the Gospel to the lost, (2) to nurture Christian growth through Bible instruction, and (3) to apply biblical instruction to all of life, including civic affairs. CRM works to accomplish these tasks through the television and radio teaching ministry of its founder and president, D. James Kennedy. CRM has also developed programs designed to effect social change by ministering with the Gospel to lawmakers and other workers on Capital Hill, and by encouraging Christians around the nation to bring their beliefs to bear upon public discussion and policy making.

History
CRM was founded in 1974 by D. James Kennedy, pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church (PCA), as an outreach program designed to “capitalize on the tremendous evangelistic potential of the electronic media” (www.crpc.org). Dr. Kennedy began ministering at Coral Ridge in 1959, when the church had 45 members. Since that time, the church has grown to a membership of nearly 10,000. Dr. Kennedy is the founder of several ministry programs in addition to CRM, including Evangelism Explosion International, one of the most popular and successful evangelistic organizations in the world. Dr. Kennedy has several earned degrees: a B.A. degree at the University of Tampa, a M. Div. at Columbia Theological Seminary, a Th.M. at Chicago Graduate School of Theology, and a Ph.D. from New York University. He is the author of over 50 books, including Evangelism Explosion, Why I Believe, and the controversial The Real Meaning of the Zodiac. Beginning in the mid-nineties, CRM, in keeping with Dr. Kennedy’s idea of the “Cultural Mandate” (see below), began to develop programs designed to inform Christians of religiously and ethically significant issues being debate in the public square, and to motivate them to voice their biblical convictions on these issues in organized and effective ways.

Programs
The Coral Ridge Hour, a weekly television program, featuring the teaching of Dr. Kennedy, began airing in 1978 on two stations. Today, the program airs on some 600 stations, four cable networks, and is available to 81 percent of U.S. television households. CRM also produces two radio programs, Truths That Transform and The Kennedy Commentary. The former is a daily half-hour preaching and teaching program (featuring Dr. Kennedy) which airs on 485 radio facilities in the U.S., the latter is a daily 90 second feature which offers listeners spiritual advice, encouragement, and social commentary. Each of these broadcast programs seek to address biblical, theological, and social issues in a topical, thoughtful, and timely manner. Largely as a result of these broadcast ministries, CRM receives some 1,500 requests a month for new believer resources, and thousands of requests yearly from believers seeking spiritual guidance.

In order to fulfill the third aspect of its mission (applying biblical principles to civic affairs) CRM has developed three additional programs. In 1994 CRM began to hold the annual Reclaiming America for Christ conferences in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This conference draws Christian leaders from all over America who desire to see biblical truths brought to bear on public life. In 1995 the D. James Kennedy Center For Christian Statesmanship (CCS) was founded. This program operates out of offices on the Senate side of Capital Hill in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the CCS is to promote and encourage Christian Statesmanship through spiritual outreach (mobilizing Christians working on the Hill to share the Gospel), ministry training (Bible studies are routinely conducted on Capital Hill) and restoring the vision of America held by the Founding Fathers; namely, that of a country in which personal faith and public life are essentially linked together. The Center For Reclaiming America was founded in 1996. The purpose of the Center is to help “restore virtue to the American culture.” The Center’s activities are organized at a grass roots level, with members in all 50 states. These activities include signing petitions, organizing phone campaigns, holding regional seminars, and encouraging believers to become involved in shaping their communities (e.g. working on local school boards). The Center maintains a website with constantly updated news items, commentary, and information on Center events. CRM also disseminates information by mail, informing its readers of legislation, court battles, and international affairs pertaining to morality and religion in the public sphere.

Philosophy of Ministry
CRM believes and teaches that biblical Christianity is true, defensible, and relevant. The Bible is the basis for Dr. Kennedy’s teaching and preaching. Dr. Kennedy believes, furthermore, that the Bible (and the Christian worldview in general) is rationally defensible; that is, there are good reasons to believe that the Christian message is true. CRM does not advocate a blind leap of faith, but encourages people to believe what there is reason to believe, and shows them what those reasons are. Because Christianity can be rationally defended, it can be a source of light in the arena of public debate. The Cultural Mandate, as understood and taught by Dr. Kennedy and CRM, impels Christians, on the basis of their reasonable faith, to engage in the value wars of our time. We must not be silent. Jesus tells his followers that they are salt and light in this world, and commands them to let their light shine before men (Mt. 5:13-16). An important aspect of this is doing social good works. CRM does not teach that Christians can cure all the ills of the world. We are not trying to establish the kingdom. Rather, “the Cultural Mandate is God’s instrument to create a flourishing context for the reception of the Gospel in the world, not a means to usher in the millennial reign of Christ” (John Barber, America Restored [CRM publication; material quoted is posted at The Center For Reclaiming America’s website: www.reclaimamerica.org]). Thus CRM, while “reforming the culture,” seeks to witness to the Gospel first and foremost. The Cultural Mandate, which is the distinguishing aspect of CRM, is “not a way to save the world, but it plays a part in God’s plan to save it” (ibid.).

Ministry Statement or Response [ Back to top ]

Mr. Rod Pitzer
Wall Watchers
2518 Plantation Center Dr., Suite B
Matthews, NC 28105

Dear Mr. Pitzer:

We are in receipt of Wall Watchers’ Financial Efficiency Ratings for Coral Ridge Ministries Media, Inc. and via this letter are providing you with our official response to the same.

Regarding the “Fundraising Cost Ratio,” we report all expenditures in strict compliance with the Accounting Standards Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Statement of Position (SOP) 98-2. Because the nature of our fundraising vehicles largely deals with getting our constituents involved in the critical moral issues of our day, our fundraising efforts also play a vital role in the fulfillment of our mission statement, namely “reforming the culture.”

In “Asset Utilization—Degree of Long-Term Investment Ratio,” the implication is that asset turnover should occur quickly. Our assets contain planned giving funds. Planned giving by definition is a long-range endeavor, so the ratio here could be misleading.

Finally, we would like to state our agreement with the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability’s position on rating ministries. To quote them, “In the context of Christian ministry and because measures are often subjective, rating can potentially cultivate division by diminishing each ministry’s uniqueness. Even if performance ratings were to be applied to the financial aspects of a ministry, it would be nearly impossible to establish objective performance ratings to measure ministry effectiveness.”

While our position on ministry rating should not be construed to imply disagreement with Wall Watchers’ efforts, we trust that any prospective donors to Coral Ridge Ministries Media, Inc. would investigate our ministry beyond a “one size fits all” ratio system and to consider the specific areas of ministry and subsequent results that God has allowed us to achieve.

We thank Him for His abundant blessings. It is exciting to be allowed to play a role in what He is doing in our country and around the world. May He be glorified in all that we do.

Sincerely yours and His,

Thomas E. Rogeberg
Executive Vice President and
Chief Operating Officer
